Description
The life cycle of the monarch butterfly is dependent on the milkweed. The caterpillars feed exclusively on milkweed leaves, resulting in a build up of toxins which is poisonous to most predators. The black and yellow stripes of the caterpillars warn would be predators of their poisonous nature. Adult monarch butterflies also feed on the nectar of milkweed. In North America, monarchs are famous for their annual migration where they congregate by the thousands at a few areas in Mexico.
