Artist's Description
The Resplendent Quetzal was sacred to the ancient Aztec and Mayans. It was the embodiment of the feathered serpent god Quetzalcoatl. In these times it was forbidden to kill a quetzal and the elaborate tail feathers were collected from live birds and then released allowing the feathers to grow back.
The male Resplendent Quetzal is one of the most spectacular birds on this planet, and can be found only in cloud forests in the highlands of southern Mexico and Central America. Quetzals feed exclusively on the fruits of a few species of trees. The Resplendent Quetzal is the national bird of Guatemala, appearing on the flag and coat of arms as well as being the name of the currency. Biotopo del Quetzal, Guatemala.
About Bruce J Robinson
I have spent the better part of my adult life traveling the world searching for adventure and making photographs. The world is full of the marvelous. Nature is my inspiration. Enjoy! "The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all art and science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his eyes are closed." -Einstein
